Thank you for a very well written look at the critical components of motivation! It's refreshing to see an article that looks at challenge, competence and the emotional aspects of caring and connectedness all in one place. I think that so often people get pulled to a side where they think that those of us who place a strong importance on the learning environment and relational aspects like belonging and connecting, somehow neglect the curriculum. If students are turned off, disenfranchised and disengaged, the curriculum is not going to matter! Kids will be motivated: curious, engaged, and consistently working, if we provide a place that is interesting, challenging, respectful and supportive so that when they take risks and fall they will move on and learn from those experiences. School should be a place where students can challenge themselves to reach new heights, not play it safe and just get through.<br />Thanks again.

Lee, these are outstanding thoughts! The emotional components of learning can often be overlooked in our emphasis on coverage of the curriculum, but emotion influences every phase of learning. It seems we sometimes fight a covert war pitting facts versus feelings, not realizing that neither extreme aids learning. “When we educators fail to appreciate the importance of students’ emotions, we fail to appreciate a critical force in students’ learning. One could argue, in fact, that we fail to appreciate the very reason that students learn at all” (Immordino-Yang & Damasio, 2008). Thanks for giving us specific portals to student motivation.
